Angry that Android 18 was able to escape in the midst of the distraction, Semi-Perfect Cell turns his sights to killing Tien. The sudden appearance of Goku catches Semi-Perfect Cell off guard, as they share words in their official meeting.
The Saiyan promises to defeat Cell after getting stronger. Cell mocks Goku for his supposed cowardice but is surprised Goku is able to grab Tien and also Piccolo, who washed up to shore, barely clinging to life.
Just as Tien and Piccolo recover, they, along with Goku and Gohan, learn that Vegeta and Future Trunks have completed their training and are ready to emerge from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Meanwhile, Bulma and baby Trunks meet up with Krillin while flying in her aircraft.
Bulma gives Krillin a remote control that is capable of shutting down Android 18 within a meter range. She then flies up to Kami's Lookout. At the Lookout, Future Trunks and Vegeta emerge from the Hyperbolic Time Chamber after a year of intensive training one day in real time. It is apparent that both of their powers have increased exponentially, and they have reached a whole new level of strength. There is also a physical change in Future Trunks' appearance; his face has matured slightly, he is now taller and more muscular than before, and his hair has grown to be shoulder-length.
Bulma is surprised by the new length of Future Trunks' hair and questions why Vegeta's hair did not grow as well. Agitated, Vegeta informs her that a pure-blooded Saiyan's hair does not grow or change once he or she is fully grown. All of them accept the armor, except for Piccolo, who is proud of his Namekian heritage, and Tien, who refuses to dress like Vegeta. Vegeta then rushes off to test his new power against Semi-Perfect Cell.
Before Future Trunks leaves, Goku gives him two Senzu Beans, and Bulma, nervous about their well-being, requests that Future Trunks takes care of himself as well as Vegeta. After scarfing down a meal prepared by Mr. Gohan is surprised by the vast open space and gravity 10x the gravity of Earth of the Hyperbolic Time Chamber. Goku instructs him to stay close at all times so that he does not get lost in the infinite space.
Goku then tells him that he is a stricter teacher than Piccolo and that it is important for Gohan to become even stronger than Goku is. Gohan, though slightly overwhelmed and doubtful that he can obtain a power greater than his father's, is eager to begin training.
Through a series of powerful energy blasts, Semi-Perfect Cell has depleted nearly every island in sight in his efforts to find Android Only one island remains, the very island that Androids 16 and 18 are hiding upon, and Semi-Perfect Cell raises his hand to blow it up as well. However, Vegeta arrives just in time to stop him, with Future Trunks following closely behind.
Semi-Perfect Cell, unaware of their intensive training in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber, is unimpressed by the arrival of Vegeta and Future Trunks, believing that they will not present much of a challenge. Vegeta proudly proclaims that he is now the strongest warrior in the universe, and exhibits his new strength by transforming into a Super Saiyan Second Grade. Semi-Perfect Cell is still not impressed, as he believes that he is superior to Vegeta no matter what transformation he goes through.
He soon learns that he is no match for the Saiyan Prince. The battle begins with the newly ascended Vegeta commanding complete control of the upper hand. Whatever attacks Semi-Perfect Cell throws at him, Vegeta counters them all, dominating in both strength and speed. As Future Trunks watches the battle, he recalls the struggles he faced in the Hyperbolic Time Chamber.
While in the Chamber, Vegeta refused any help from Future Trunks, insisting that he only trains alone, which made his feelings of indifference towards his son even more apparent. However, in spite of Vegeta's lack of caring, Future Trunks still greatly yearns for his father's approval, expressing that, "I honored my father's wishes to be left alone, but I watched him from afar when I could, and I learned. I knew that my father would achieve the greatness he desired, he would climb any mountain that stood in his path, and I vowed that I would follow in his footsteps.
I would make my own ascension so that one day I might face my father as his equal, and he will know that I am his son Father, one day I will prove myself to you.
Maybe then you'll understand that all of these dangers you're so eager to face You don't have to face them alone. While Vegeta battles Semi-Perfect Cell, Krillin arrives on the island with the remote control that Bulma gave him and soon locates the Androids.
Even though he knows the importance of carrying out his mission to destroy Android 18, he hides behind a mountain, conflicted. Ever since Android 18 kissed Krillin on the mountainside road, he has developed strong feelings of affection for her and struggles internally against causing her any harm. Much to Android 18's surprise, Krillin smashes the remote. Back at the Lookout, Piccolo and Tien watch the fight.
Piccolo mentions that Vegeta is toying with Semi-Perfect Cell and he had the strength to defeat him a long time ago. He believes that decision may come back to haunt him. Goku then informs him that the transformation to Super Saiyan comes in response to a need, not a desire.
Attempting to make sense of this child's power that far exceeds his own, Cell fires a massive Kamehameha , knowing that if Gohan dodges it, it would destroy the Earth; to his surprise, Gohan easily counters it with a larger and stronger Kamehameha , pushing the blast back and destroying a significant portion of Cell's body.
Goku tells Gohan to finish Cell off, but Gohan, still in a rage from his awakened power, declares that he will make Cell suffer for what he has done. As Goku predicted, Cell regenerates, and out of frustration and rage, transforms into a state that maximizes his power, just like the Super Saiyan Third Grade form.
Future Trunks makes note that it was the same mistake that Cell mocked him for when he had fought him as a 3rd Grade Super Saiyan. Gohan beats Cell so hard that he is forced to regurgitate Android 18 , which reverts him back to his Semi-Perfect form. Left with no other options, Cell initiates his self-destruction sequence , pumping his body up with enough ki to destroy the Earth.
Gohan is unable to do anything, and Goku steps in as he chooses to sacrifice himself in order to save the Earth as he bids Gohan and the others farewell. He teleports Cell to King Kai's Planet where Cell explodes, destroying the planet along with all life on it. After regenerating from a single cell that had survived his self-destruction, the now-Super Perfect Cell uses Instant Transmission to return to Earth just moments after his apparent death, announcing his presence by killing Future Trunks with a single Full Power Death Beam through the chest.
Vegeta, enraged by the death of his son, launches a furious assault on Cell; it is in vain, as Cell is unaffected by the attack and quickly slams Vegeta aside. Cell then attempts to finish Vegeta off with a second ki blast , but Gohan intervenes and takes the full force of it himself, breaking his left arm as a result. Cell wastes no time after this and fires a massive Kamehameha at Gohan , proclaiming that it will not only destroy the Earth, but the entire Solar System as well.
Gohan, with spiritual assistance from Goku, launches a counter Kamehameha with his right arm. The two blasts meet in the middle, and a power struggle between Gohan and Cell ensues. Cell has the upper hand when the Z-Fighters jump in. Their attacks do not affect Cell, though, and he maintains his blast. The only attack that affects Cell at all is a powerful blast from Vegeta which throws Cell off, and allows Gohan to destroy him once and for all, thus ending the Cell Games. Though Gohan is effectively the winner of the tournament, the "official" winner is Mr.
Satan claims that he defeated Cell single-handedly after Cell beat the other fighters. Despite the impossibility of this story's validity, Mr. Satan is easily believed by the populace and considered the true winner of the Cell Games thus saving the Z-Fighters from media pressure. Satan on a talk show as the movie "re-creation" of Cell vs Mr. Satan plays in the background.
Satan is shown being interviewed on a talk show about a movie "re-creation" of the Cell Games featuring a realistic re-enactment of Mr. Satan's unseen battle with Cell. In the "re-creation", Mr. Satan is depicted as stronger than Cell who cannot believe that such a being exists. The re-creation features real footage of Android 17 who appeared where Cell had perished after being revived by Shenron along with Cell's other victims. The interviewer asks Mr.
Satan about the mysterious 17 though Mr. Satan views the question as suggesting Cell survived and is quick to dismiss it, by confirming the fact that Cell was dead.
Fortunately, Android 17 found and managed to tame them. As a result, he allowed the Cell Juniors to live on Monster Island as they were essentially rare lifeforms that are potentially an endangered species due to the demise of their progenitor Cell.
